A 700-metre stretch of Highland Lakes Road east of Bothwell will soon have a lower speed limit after safety concerns were raised by the local council.
The Commissioner for Transport has approved reducing the speed limit to 80km/h on the section near the township.
Central Highlands Council requested the review, which was then assessed by the Department of State Growth.
The department found multiple driveways and intersections along the stretch increased the risk of crashes from turning vehicles.
“Research shows that even small reductions in speed can result in considerable safety benefits,” the department said.

New speed limit signs are expected to be installed next week.
Warning signs alerting drivers to the upcoming change will also be put in place.
The new limit will take effect once signage is up.
“Road users are reminded to follow the posted speed limits and always drive to the conditions,” the department said.
