Plans for a new adult shop in the Hobart CBD have been approved by city councillors, but not everyone is feeling the love.
@adultshop.com has been given the green light to move into the proposed location at 93 Liverpool Street, as long as they stick to council conditions.
The Hobart City Council planning committee received eight objections to the new store after public consultation, with some locals concerned that the shop may “negatively impact nearby restaurants and a childcare centre,” as well as “compromising the family-friendly character throughout the precinct.”
“Hobart City is known for its historical charm, natural landscapes and cultural richness,” a planning officer said of the objections.

“Having an adult shop with its explicit advertising and provocative visuals will undoubtedly clash with the elegance and allure that Hobart possesses.”
“It is crucial that we preserve the aesthetic appeal of our city for the enjoyment of residents and the admiration of visitors.”
“The presence of such a shop may undermine our standing as an inclusive and family-friendly destination.”
The store will be able to open with conditions, including that it does not have any flashing or illuminated signs and that the Liverpool Street window display must not contain any explicit images, wording, products or materials.
