A new fleet of rubbish trucks fitted with artificial intelligence is now working across Kingborough.
Kingborough Council said the kerbside collection trucks were part of its waste collection service run by contractor Veolia.
The council said each truck was fitted with AI-powered cameras and sensors that could detect pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists near a bin during collection.
If someone enters the collection zone while a bin is being emptied, the system automatically stops the bin-lifting arm and alerts both the driver and the person nearby.

Acting mayor Christian Street said the technology helped protect people, especially children, who might move too close to a bin while it is being emptied.
“It’s great to see the new trucks on our roads across Kingborough,” Street said.

“Veolia is the first waste collection company in Tasmania to introduce this technology and we are pleased to see these innovative safety features being implemented in Kingborough.”
Veolia Tasmania southern regional manager Chris Dickinson welcomed the rollout of the new fleet.
“This new technology adds another important layer of safety to protect vulnerable road users and our team,” Dickinson said.
