Tasmania’s newly deployed fire detection cameras are proving their worth, with AI-enabled technology capturing crucial live footage of a bushfire near Stieglitz.

The camera at South Sister near St Marys, part of the expanding Tasmanian Integrated Fire Camera Network, provided emergency crews with real-time situational awareness as the fire developed.

The live stream delivered information on the fire’s movement, intensity and changing smoke and wind directions, enabling faster, more effective responses to protect local communities.

The network is being built through collaboration between Sustainable Timber Tasmania, the Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and delivery partner Indicium Dynamics.

“This real-time insight is helping crews respond quickly and effectively to protect communities and forests,” said a Sustainable Timber Tasmania spokesperson.

Plans are underway to expand the system to more than 30 cameras across Tasmania, integrating all feeds into a single portal to enhance cross-agency coordination during bushfire emergencies.
