A new project has transformed an empty Launceston shopfront into a winter hub of activity where everyone is welcome.
The Lounge, presented by Launceston Central, is offering a cosy ‘third place’ in the city centre where people can gather to enjoy music, art, games and companionship in a warm and welcoming environment.
The space, which opened on Monday, hosts a variety of entertainment and experiences during its eight-week tenure.
“We’ve got some great local music talent coming in to perform and jam sessions where members of the public are invited to join in,” Launceston Central CEO Amanda McEvoy said.

“If you’re not into music, there’ll be art displays, interactive workshops and plenty more to engage with.”
The Lounge also offers an inner-city sanctuary for those seeking a more passive retreat, a warm space to rest and the company of other people.

“Come and enjoy the warm heaters, cosy couches, beanbags and rugs and un-hibernate in the city with us this winter.”
For those in need of a sensory-friendly retreat, regular ‘quiet times’ will be offered, when lights are dimmed, background music is turned off and hushed conversation volumes are encouraged.
The vision for the project has come to life thanks to a host of local sponsors who donated products for the space’s décor.
“We’ve been blown away by the response from local businesses and community groups wanting to get behind the idea and make The Lounge something really special,” McEvoy said.

The Lounge will be operational from 3 June through to 19 July, with opening times available on the Launceston Central website.
