More supported accommodation for Tasmanians in need has opened in the state’s north.
The new Shorewell Park Building for Family-Based Care in Burnie is made up of four single-bedroom units, a two-bedroom unit and a shared unit with a sleepover room.
The facility will cater to people with disabilities, aged pensioners, the homeless, disadvantaged youth and any community members with high needs, providing them with access to affordable accommodation.
“The design provides an optimal blend of independent and communal living with spaces to provide required support services, in a 6 star energy rated building that is easy to access, clean and cost efficient,” Supported Affordable Accommodation Trust (SAAT) Chair Bob Gordon said.

“The Trust is thankful to the Burnie Council for making the acquisition of this public land possible. If more councils could look at releasing excess public spaces for this purpose, it would go a long way to meeting the shortage in available affordable housing.”
The complex was developed by SAAT with a $6 million grant from the Federal Government.
Income generated from renting out the units will be reinvested to fund future housing projects, with SAAT aiming to build an additional six units every three years.
