Southern Tasmanian firefighting brigades have received a boost to their capabilities with the delivery of a new generation of light tanker vehicles ahead of the summer bushfire season.

Brigades in Kingston, Taroona, Mount Nelson, Glenorchy and New Norfolk are now equipped with the new 5.1 light tankers as part of the state government’s tanker replacement program.

Minister Felix Ellis unveiled the vehicles during the Tasmania Fire Service 2025 Southern Region medals presentation.

“These new light trucks will boost our frontline response and give southern communities greater confidence as we head into the fire season,” Ellis said.

The upgraded vehicles feature enhanced off-road capabilities and greater pumping power, allowing firefighters to respond more effectively to bushfires in challenging terrain.

The announcement coincided with a ceremony honouring 34 volunteers who received National Medals for service ranging from 15 to 55 years with the Tasmania Fire Service.

Two long-serving volunteers, Robin Howlett AFSM from Campania Brigade and Peter Meaburn from Parattah Brigade, were recognised for their remarkable 55 years of service.

“Our career and volunteer firefighters are everyday heroes, working tirelessly to keep us safe, whether that be on the front line or in operational and support roles behind the scenes,” Ellis said.
