Hobart residents will soon have the chance to try out an electric bike for free with the launch of a new e-bike library.

To be run out of Hobart Bike Hire on the waterfront, the library will have six different e-bikes available for locals to borrow for up to two weeks.

The selection will include cargo, step-through commuter and top-bar commuter bikes.

Each bike comes equipped with lights, a lock and other essentials.

“E-bikes are growing in popularity each year and are a great, sustainable way to travel,” a program information page explains.

“They allow anyone to enjoy a smoother, less strenuous ride and make it easier to ride while carrying children and bulky items.”

“However, they are generally more costly than a traditional push bike so it can be daunting to go out and buy one if you’re not absolutely sure it’s right for you.”

The e-bike library is funded by the Tasmanian Government’s Community Climate Change Action Grants Program.

To take part, residents must be at least 18 years old, live in Tasmania and have a safe place to store the bike when not in use.

Participants will also get three months of bike insurance, covering medical costs, income protection and third-party liability.

The library is expected to open at the Hobart waterfront in the coming weeks.
