New images of the proposed Macquarie Point Stadium have been released, giving a clearer indication of its scale from the Hobart Cenotaph.
The images were unveiled by the Macquarie Point Development Corporation (MPDC) on Thursday morning, nearly one month since the first official designs of the stadium were made public.
The stadium’s size and proximity to the Cenotaph have previously sparked concerns from the Returned & Services League (RSL), which has backed calls to protect the memorial from the development with special legislation.
RSL Australia Deputy President Duncan Anderson last month said the Cenotaph is the nation’s oldest state capital city war memorial and its values of heritage, cultural and spiritual significance must be respected.
“It is a prominent Hobart landmark commanding important sightlines across Hobart and is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register,” he said.
Anderson said the proposed stadium would destroy the Cenotaph’s views and dwarf the memorial.
“Undoubtedly, it is of great historic heritage significance, marking the service and sacrifice of Tasmanians in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world over more than a century,” he said.
“As custodians of this sacred site, RSL Australia and its state branch cannot stand by and allow the Cenotaph to be impacted in this way.”
The proposed stadium features a fixed-dome roof and will peak at 51-metres tall.
The MPDC say the latest renders released today were created from positions “selected by RSL Tasmania”.
“The roof will be supported by an elegant steel and timber frame, with steel bracing at 20-metre intervals and structural timber cross beams at 5-metre intervals,” an spokesperson for the MPDC said.
Pulse has approached RSL Tasmania for comment.
