KFC fans in Hobart are a step closer to getting their wish of a restaurant in the city, with an appeal successfully overturning a previous council rejection.

The new store, which will feature a drive-through, is planned for the intersection with Harrington Street and Patrick Street.

It will be the first in the city since the Liverpool Street store closed several years ago.

The restaurant was initially blocked by the Hobart City Council in 2022 over traffic concerns and its proximity to nearby schools.

However, the developer appealed the decision to the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, leading to an agreement with the council in May.

This agreement included conditions that restrict lighting and hours of operation.

Currently, Hobart residents have to travel to nearby suburbs like Kingston, Rosny or Glenorchy for their KFC fix.

The project still requires final building approvals, with the developer reportedly working to submit an application to the council by the end of the year.

Construction could start by mid-2025 and doors could be open by the end of the year.
