A fleet of new ‘mini’ mobile speed cameras have hit Tasmania’s streets, as the State Government continues its crackdown on speeding and mobile phone use.

The new cameras are significantly smaller than the existing cameras introduced last year, with some social media users comparing them to ‘WALL-E’ from the 2008 namesake movie.

Mobile ‘Over is Over’ speed cameras were first introduced to Tasmania in September last year, with the fleet expected to grow to 16 by September this year.

A State Growth spokesperson said the new miniature cameras are part of the recently announced expansion of the fleet, and commenced operation on 26 June 2023.

The cameras are owned and operated by Sensys Gatso Australia under an $8m multi-year contract.

Statistics from the Tasmanian government show that serious injuries have increased by 57.3% compared to last year.
