Tasmanian energy company TasGas is no more, having just completed a rebrand to Solstice Energy as they prepare to start selling electricity from next year.

The move is aimed at boosting competition in the state’s small and concentrated to residential electricity market, which is currently dominated by Aurora Energy.

TasGas/Solstice CEO Phaedra Deckart said Tasmanian households were right now ‘fed up’ by the lack of options for electricity and the impact that was having on household bills.

“Our entry to electricity retailing in Tasmania will introduce much-needed competition in the Tasmanian energy market and provide a real and credible local choice for households across the state,” she said.

“Our ambition is to provide more local choice, with more investment in new technology, ideas and alternatives.”

Solstice Energy will become the tenth retailer in the space, following the collapse of Elysium Energy last year.

“Tas Gas has been part of the Tasmanian community for the past 20 years and has played a key role in Tasmania’s energy security as the state’s leading natural gas company.”

The company will continue to operate the states gas pipeline infrastructure and sell gas to retail and other customers, as well as pursuing new bio-fuel and renewable gas related projects.
