New Tasmania Police vehicles will hit highways across the state today in a bid to curb road safety offences.
Two BMW530d highway patrols cars, made up of a sedan and wagon, will be trialled on major roads as part of a continued focus on road safety and traffic law enforcement.
Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar said following the trial, the Beemers could be the latest permanent additions to the wide variety of specialised resources used by Police.
“The vehicles are used by other jurisdictions interstate and are specifically designed to suit highway intercepts,” he said.
“They meet our safety and performance standards and will be subject to rigorous evaluation tests over the next three months to ensure they meet our needs.”
“Importantly, these vehicles are fitted out with a unique ‘police pack’ for the interior and exterior, which removes some of the high-end luxury features and makes them well suited for police work.”
