Launceston’s CBD has gained almost 300 new parking spaces with the opening of the Gasworks car park, bringing a six-year development saga to an end.
The seven-storey complex on Willis Street began welcoming motorists last week, becoming one of the city’s largest parking facilities.
The project was first floated in 2019 but hit early hurdles when the council rejected plans for an eight-storey, 400-bay version.
Developers were forced to scale it back, delaying construction until 2024.

The new car park now ranks equal second in the CBD for capacity, alongside CH Smith’s facility, behind only the 370-bay Quadrant Plaza above Toyworld.
Located near the Albert Hall Convention Centre, the site also sits close to UTAS’s expanding city campus.

Two new hotels are planned for the neighbourhood, including a $62 million Fragrance Hotel on Cimitiere and Tamar streets.
The facility uses modern plate-recognition technology with no cash payments accepted. Two high-speed lifts serve all seven levels.
Weekday rates start at $2.75 for 30 minutes, rising by $1.45 every half hour. The daily cap is $10 for parking between 6am and 7:30pm.
On weekends, drivers pay a $6.60 flat rate for the day, while overnight parking costs $11 across all nights.
