A new sporting initiative celebrating young women’s courage both on and off the field will kick off next month when Hobart’s two private girls’ schools face off in the inaugural SHE Cup.

The football competition between Fahan School and Collegiate will debut on Wednesday 24 September at Fahan, featuring teams from Years 7/8 and 9/10.

Organisers hope the match will become an annual tradition while raising awareness and funds for women’s health issues with the SHE foundation, a charity that supports Tasmanians suffering from gynaecological cancers.

SHE spokesperson Alex Norris said the cup transcends typical school sporting rivalries.

“The SHE Cup is more than a football match, it’s about empowering young women to play with courage, resilience, and character,” she said.

The inaugural SHE Shines Medal will be awarded to the player that shows exceptional bravery on the field, honouring the legacy of Jo Harris and her courageous battle with cancer.

“The SHE Shines Medal is a fitting tribute to Jo’s legacy and the values she embodied and we are honoured that the next generation of young Tasmanian women will carry this message forward,” Norris said.

Players will make gold-coin donations to participate, with both schools wearing teal socks and hair ribbons to support women’s health initiatives.
