Tasmania has taken another step towards its goal of providing 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032, with the completion of 29 new homes in North Hobart.

Built in partnership with Centacare Evolve Housing, the new homes will provide much-needed accommodation for people on the public housing waiting list.

Minister for Housing and Planning Felix Ellis said the project brings the state’s total number of social and affordable homes to over 3,620.

“It means that we’re adding the stock of supply for public and social housing tenants in Tasmania, older people and younger people at this series of homes,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful way that we can help Tasmanians doing it tough and provide that safety, security and opportunity to grow as well.”

Centacare Evolve Housing Acting CEO Cody Burden said the new homes will be a mix of one and two-bedroom units, with priority given to those at the top of the waiting list.

21 of the units will be used to house applicants aged 55+ and the remaining eight will be allocated to younger Tasmanians.

“The one-bedroom ones will be aimed more towards singles and maybe some couples in the two bedrooms we would hope to get some families involved as well,” he said.

“The majority of our units are generally two to three bedroom … if it’s a site like this, it’s very hard to fit some three bedrooms in.”

Homes Tasmania CEO Eleri Morgan-Thomas said the Letitia Street location next to the Brooker Highway has easy access to shops, services and the city.

“I would say this is pretty well located in being able to get to shops or things that you want to do,” she said.

“There’s a football ground across the road. There’s a cafe across the road. We’re not in the middle of nowhere and there’s public transport.”
