New fixed speed cameras are being installed on Hobart’s Tasman Bridge and will soon be watching the 72,000 daily drivers crossing the River Derwent.
Speed cameras have been monitoring the bridge since the early 1990s, but the current units have reached the end of their operational life.
Work began this week to remove the outdated cameras, which had reportedly been out of service for some time.
Photos taken Tuesday revealed new Sensys Gatso traffic monitoring systems being mounted above the eastbound lanes.

A State Growth spokesperson confirmed the new cameras will be far more effective at catching offenders.
“The new technology will detect speeding vehicles in all bridge lanes and multiple vehicles at once, making them a strong speeding deterrent,” they said.

Sensys Gatso, the company behind the new bridge cameras, already operates 16 mobile speed cameras across the state.
These mobile units have proven “exceedingly effective”, detecting 60,000 traffic infringements in the past 12 months alone.
The new bridge cameras are scheduled to become operational as part of a trial later this month.
