A specialised taskforce has been established to ensure local workers, businesses and materials are prioritised in the construction of the new Macquarie Point Stadium.
The Building and Construction Tasmania First Taskforce met on Wednesday with Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Development Eric Abetz for a formal briefing following last week’s stadium approval in parliament.
Representatives from Tasmania’s building, property, civil, engineering, electrical, plumbing and cement sectors attended the meeting, the group’s second gathering.
Abetz said the state government’s is committed to putting Tasmanians at the centre of the major infrastructure project.

“For example, Tasmanian timber will be a focal point of this landmark development,” he said.
“It will be hewn by Tasmanian foresters, milled at a Tasmanian sawmill and become a feature of our world-class stadium.”

The taskforce aims to maximise local participation throughout the stadium’s construction, from materials to labour and supply chains.
Master Builders Tasmania CEO Jenna Cairney described the meeting as “an important step forward” following government approval of the project.
“We have the greenlight for the biggest infrastructure project in our state for the next decade and that’s great news for our industries,” Cairney said.
“Tasmanian businesses, Tasmanian workers and Tasmanian supply chains must benefit every step of the way.”

Cairney said the taskforce’s focus extends beyond just the stadium.
“We must ensure that the confidence, investment and opportunities extend beyond the bricks and mortar of the stadium in Hobart, to reach every corner of the state,” she said.
