A man in his 50s is fighting for life in hospital after he was found with serious injuries on a New Town street overnight.
The man was discovered unconscious on Swanston Street around 2:50am on Friday.
Detective Inspector David Gill said the man was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
He is currently undergoing surgery for injuries to his torso and neck.
Police earlier cordoned off a section of Swanston Street between Risdon Road and Cross Street while they investigated the incident.
“A police investigation is ongoing to determine how the man sustained his injuries,” Gill said.
“At this stage police are investigating a number of possibilities, including the man being the victim of an assault or struck by a vehicle.”
“If anyone has any information in relation to how the man was injured, or suspicious activities in the area around the time, I ask them to come forward.”
