Tasmania Police have hailed this year’s Devonport Cup a success after the event passed without a single arrest.

About 5,500 punters descended on Spreyton Racecourse on Wednesday for the annual race day, with officers conducting 750 wand searches throughout the afternoon.

No weapons or dangerous items were detected.

Two men were moved on after the final race due to their behaviour, but both left without fuss.

Acting Inspector Martin Parker said the crowd was well-behaved and police were encouraged by positive interactions with the public.

“It was very gratifying for police members at the event to be stopped by members of the public and personally thanked for their service and ensuring people’s safety at the cup,” he said.

Officers from uniform, criminal investigation and drugs and firearms units worked across the grounds, supported by a drug detection dog.

Devonport Racing Committee deputy chair Peter George said the visible police presence helped create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

“The police presence, in conjunction with security, provided a safe environment for everyone to enjoy themselves and have a good time,” he said.

Road policing units stationed near the racecourse conducted 827 random breath tests, with not a single drink or drug driver nabbed.

Four traffic infringement notices and one defect notice were issued.

Parker said the results showed racegoers were making smart choices.

“As we know, alcohol is a contributor to many fatal and serious crashes, so it’s fantastic that drivers did the right thing yesterday,” he said.

As cup crowds spilled into the Devonport CBD after the races, police maintained a presence at licensed venues.

One woman was arrested for public order offences later in the evening and bailed to face the Devonport Magistrates Court at a later date.
