A significant earthquake has struck off the south-west coast of New Zealand this afternoon, with tremors felt across multiple towns and cities in the South Island.
The magnitude 6.7 quake occurred at a depth of 101 kilometres around 2:52pm local time, according to official reports.
Australian authorities have moved quickly to reassure residents that there is no tsunami threat to Tasmania or any other part of the Australian coastline.
According to GeoNet, the earthquake was felt by residents across Alexandra, Balclutha, Dunedin, Gore, Invercargill and Milford Sound.
