Two rivers in Tasmania’s North-East now bear dual names as a tribute to Indigenous heritage and culture.
New signage has recently been erected at Worewoter/Little Pipers River near Bridport and Larnerrangener/Great Musselroe River north of St Helens in a project spearheaded by the Melythina Tiakana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation.
With over 20 dual-named places in the region and more to come, the MTWAC are setting an example they hope will be followed by the rest of the state.
Among these are mountains Luethcracener/Doctors Peak in Goshen and Lumeragenena Wuggelena/St Patricks Head in St Marys.

Both now carry their Aboriginal names, alongside Meetermer/George River, Rownunne/Little Mount Horror and Tulampanga/Gog Range.
The corporation plan to launch a website, produce a printed dictionary and create interactive maps of historical records in a bid to provide translations and meanings to the community.
