A false road rule claiming Tasmanian drivers must keep their headlights on at all times or face a $250 fine has been spreading through local social media groups, prompting Tasmania Police to issue a warning.
The fake rule, supposedly introduced on November 1, has been shared widely across community Facebook groups around the state.
“We’ve noticed some misleading posts claiming it’s now law to drive with your lights on all day or risk a $250 fine,” police said.
“While that’s not true, having your lights on is always a good idea.”
The misinformation is part of a nationwide trend, with similar false claims popping up in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia in recent months.

Transport authorities across multiple states have been forced to debunk the rumour as AI-generated content continues to spread rapidly on social media platforms.
Tasmania Police confirmed the actual headlight requirements remain unchanged.
“The real rule? Use your lights whenever visibility is reduced,” they said.
This includes driving in fog, heavy rain or low light conditions.
The fake posts have left many Tasmanian motorists confused about whether they need to change their driving habits.
Police emphasised that, while the all-day headlight rule is false, using headlights appropriately improves road safety.
“It helps other road users see you and keeps everyone safer,” they said.
