A Launceston man is facing multiple charges after allegedly spitting on two women and confronting members of the public in the city’s CBD on Sunday afternoon.

Police will allege the 32-year-old spat on two women in the Brisbane Street area about 12:30pm before confronting several other people.

An off-duty police officer arrested the man with help from two bystanders.

The man has been charged with assault, stealing, disorderly conduct, possession of a knife and offences against police.

He appeared in an after-hours court on Monday and was remanded in custody to reappear at a later date.

The incident occurred in the Brisbane Street area at 12:30pm on Sunday

Senior Sergeant James Scicluna said witnesses would have found the incident distressing.

“Understandably this would have been a confronting incident for the witnesses,” he said.

“People have the right to feel safe in our community and this type of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by police.”

Police are appealing for the two women who were allegedly spat on to come forward.

“As part of our ongoing investigation police would like to speak to the two women who were spat at, we understand they left the area shortly after the incident,” Scicluna said.

Police have thanked the two men who assisted the off-duty officer during the arrest.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
