Online activity of Friends’ School students under police investigation

Tasmania Police are investigating alleged illegal online activity involving students from the prestigious Friends’ School in North Hobart.

The Friends’ School notified parents last week about “online behaviour involving students from Friends’ and other local schools” and that the matter had been referred to police.

“Tasmania Police has received a report regarding alleged illegal online activity involving a group of students at a southern Tasmanian school,” a police spokesperson told Pulse.

“Police are working closely with the school, and an investigation is underway.”

The school told parents it was now able to inform families based on police advice.

It is understood the incident may have involved the alleged use of AI-generated content.

“The wellbeing and safety of our students remain our highest priorities,” the school said in its letter to parents seen by Pulse.

“Support is available through the School, and we encourage families to contact us if your child would benefit from speaking with a staff member.”

Police have used the incident to remind parents about online safety, urging them to have regular conversations with children about internet use.

They recommend parents supervise their children’s online activity, check privacy settings and know how to report concerning behaviour.

“Be approachable if your child needs help,” police said, referencing guidance from the ThinkUKnow online safety program.

A spokesperson for the Department for Education, Children and Young People told Pulse the department was “not aware of any government school involvement” in the matter.

The nature of the alleged online activity has not been disclosed as the police investigation continues.
