Tasmania Police have charged dozens of people in the lead-up to Christmas as part of a successful operation targeting shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in Glenorchy.
Operation Swipe has resulted in 453 charges being laid against 74 individuals since the beginning of December.
Of those charged, 37 were arrested, including 18 who were held in custody for court appearances.
36 others were issued summonses, one youth received a caution action notice and 38 young people were charged with a combined 280 offences.
Eight of them were held in custody to appear in court.
Inspector Jason Klug said the operation demonstrates that “illegal activities and anti-social behaviours will not be tolerated by police”.
“These patrols are about sending a message to the small percentage of people in our community who choose to do the wrong thing,” he said.
He said police will continue to work closely with the community to reduce offending.
