A baby wombat orphaned after his mother was hit and killed by a car has found a temporary new home at a wildlife sanctuary.
‘Beanz’ was found tucked away in his mother’s pouch and rushed to the Bonorong Wildlife Hospital for treatment.
The young joey survived the incident but not unscathed, with grazes across much of his body and a “nasty injury” to his tail.
Despite the trauma, Beanz is thriving in care and will be released back into the wild once he has fully recovered.
“[He] is doing well in care despite everything he has been through,” a spokesperson for the sanctuary said.
“Beanz was placed in the expert care of a registered wombat rehabilitator who has helped him recover from this traumatic event.”
“Beanz has been attending regular appointments with his carer … to treat the tail injury.”
Bonorong operates Tasmania’s largest 24-hour wildlife rescue service.
It helps over 15,000 animals annually, a number steadily increasing by around 500 to 1,000 animals each year.
