Tasmanians are being encouraged to brave the cold and show their support for mental health by wearing shorts today on the shortest day of the year.

Over 22,000 locals are expected to strip off their pants and pull on their shorts for the fourth annual SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY Shorts Day.

The theme this year is ‘Let Your Shorts Talk’, with founder Mitch McPherson emphasising the power of visual representation and sparking meaningful conversations.

“Together, we will be braving the cold and braving the conversation around mental health,” he said.

“It’s always so humbling to see so many Tasmanians find their way to get involved, from individuals to different codes of sporting clubs, government departments, large and small businesses and schools.”

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts there will be just nine hours and one minute of daylight on the shortest day.

“Seeing how the community is embracing Shorts Day is our team’s favourite part of it all, after months preparing for the big day, we finally get to see in person how much Shorts Day means to Tasmanians,” McPherson said.

Funds raised on the day will support SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY’s work in promoting positive mental health and preventing suicide.
