Two Tasmanian men have been charged with trafficking firearms as part of an ongoing joint investigation between Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police.
The pair from Hobart’s northern suburbs are accused of being involved in the transportation of several firearms concealed in a vehicle from Devonport to Geelong on the Spirit of Tasmania in June this year.
Investigators allege the pair, a 28-year-old from Claremont and 38-year-old from Lutana, organised the movement of the weapons, which were successfully detected and seized by authorities.
Both men have been charged under the Commonwealth Criminal Code, with the offence carrying a minimum mandatory sentence of five years imprisonment if convicted.
Police believe other people were directly involved in the trafficking of the firearms and are continuing their investigations.
“Anyone with information about drug or firearms trafficking is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers,” a spokesperson said.
“Information can be provided anonymously.”
