The Bowen Bridge is completely blocked after serious crash involving multiple vehicles this afternoon.
Traffic in both directions is affected, with the bridge closed and police asking motorists to avoid the area.
Motorists are being diverted at the Goodwood Road and Howard Road intersection.
Several people have reportedly been injured, with multiple reportedly in a serious condition, police said.
The bridge is expected to remain closed for a number of hours as police investigate the incident.
Vehicles currently stuck on the bridge behind the crash are slowly being turned around with the help of Tasmania Police.
Updated 6pm, Friday September 27: Two elderly people in their 80s have died at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash on the Bowen Bridge this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the incident involving a truck and multiple vehicles around 3:30pm on Friday.
Inspector Jason Klug said a third occupant in the silver Holden Barina, of which the couple died, was taken to hospital with injuries.
Speaking at the scene, Klug said early investigations into the crash are underway, with a specific line of inquiry being pursued.
“Initial inquiries indicate the truck driver was travelling east on the bridge in a Hino heavy vehicle, when it collided with a silver Holden Barina travelling in front,” he said.
“The Barina then collided with two other vehicles, a red Holden Commodore and a blue Honda HRV, also heading east.”
“A woman and two children in the Commodore, and a woman who was the sole occupant of the HRV were also not seriously injured.”
“The truck driver was not physically injured in the crash.”
“Our condolences go out to the family and those other people who were involved in this incident.”
“It’s an incident that affects not just the families but the communities.”
Klug is asking anyone to come forward with any information, particularly dash cam footage.
