Thousands of walkers have secured a booking to tackle Tasmania’s Overland Track next season, with the most popular months selling out within hours.
Bookings for the 2026/27 season opened at 9am yesterday for the multi-day alpine walk, which draws walkers from across Australia and around the world.
By 4pm, 5,805 people had booked to walk the 65-kilometre track between Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair.
Most of those bookings came from interstate visitors, who accounted for 4,481 places. Tasmanians took 881 spots and international tourists booked 443.
Tasmanians made up more than 15% of the bookings this year.

The peak December 2026 to March 2027 period was fully booked by 2pm.
November and April still have limited spots left and there is good availability for October and May, the department said.
The Overland Track is popular across the spring, summer and autumn walking season, which runs from October 1 to May 31 each year.
Just 34 places are available to book each day over the season.
A Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania spokesperson said the daily limits helped Parks and Wildlife Service manage departures.
They were in place “to reduce the potential for social impacts and damage to the remote bushwalking environments on the Overland Track,” the spokesperson said.
Walkers can book online through the Parks and Wildlife Service website.
