Plans for a new five-star hotel on the current site of Launceston’s Paterson Street car park have been met with praise from the state’s peak hospitality body.

The Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) says the proposed 190-room development would open up an “untapped market” in northern Tasmania and “inject millions” into the local economy.

“Launceston is an iconic destination that deserves a world-class hotel offering to match the growing demand from discerning travellers,” THA chief executive Steve Old said.

“The profile of the city has increased significantly in recent years, thanks in part to being named as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in November 2021, making it one of only 36 cities worldwide bestowed with the title.”

Master Builders Tasmania also welcomed the announcement, saying it would provide a major boost to the building sector.

“It’s important to have a strong pipeline of works to maintain confidence in the sector and also to provide new opportunities for our workforce,” chief executive David Clerk said.

“This is why it’s so important that we continue to support and invest in the High Vis Army scheme so that we can continue to build the workforce needed to tackle this project as well as the $27 billion infrastructure pipeline over the next 10 years.”
