Police identify pedestrian left with critical injuries after being hit by car on Bass Highway

Updated 9:40am, Wednesday: Police are appealing for the public’s help after a man, who is yet to be identified, was hit by a car on the Bass Highway overnight.

The pedestrian was “in or near” the eastbound lane when he was struck by a vehicle at around 11:10pm near Round Hill.

“The man has critical injuries, including multiple fractures and has been transferred to Royal Hobart Hospital after receiving initial treatment at the scene and then the North-West Regional Hospital in Burnie,” police said.

Police believe the man is in his 40s, about 160 to 170cm tall, with a slim build.

He has a grey beard, short black and grey hair and a distinctive star tattoo on his right knee.

“He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash,” police said.

“Anyone that may have seen the man on the Bass Highway and near the Round Hill area on Tuesday night or knows someone fitting the description is asked to contact police of 131 444.”

Updated 1:30pm, Wednesday: Police have since identified the pedestrian.

Earlier: A pedestrian is in a critical condition after being hit by a vehicle on the Bass Highway near Burnie last night.

The man was struck by an eastbound vehicle near Round Hill Lighthouse at about 11:10pm on Tuesday.

Police said the injured man was “on the roadway” at the time. He was rushed to the North-West Regional Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“Police would like to thank those members of the public who assisted at the crash prior to emergency services arrival,” a spokesperson added.
