Emergency services were called to the scene at around 7am.

One person was trapped in a four-wheel drive and had to be freed by emergency crews.

They were airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The second person, who was in the other vehicle, was not seriously injured.

The road was blocked in both directions for about five hours while emergency services worked at the scene.

Police had earlier urged motorists to avoid the area and expect delays.
