Tasmania’s most familiar television face will bid farewell on Monday after more than four decades delivering nightly weather forecasts.
Peter ‘Murph’ Murphy will present his final weather report on 7 Tasmania on September 22, ending a career that has made him Australia’s longest-serving commercial TV weather presenter.
The 41-year run has seen Murph become a household name across the island state.
His calm delivery and partnership with news anchor Kim Millar have made him a nightly fixture for generations of Tasmanian families.

“It’s been an incredible privilege to be part of Tasmanians’ lives every night,” Murph said.
“Weather is such a big part of this community and I’ve always tried to respect that while sneaking in a little fun along the way.”

Murph said Tasmania’s weather was unpredictable but the job had been unforgettable.
“An award of some sort should also be bestowed upon Kim Millar and Jo Palmer for their ability to have withstood so much over the years,” he said.
Murph began his broadcasting career in radio in Moree before moving to Tasmania in 1982.
He joined 7EX initially, then moved to TNT9 two years later to front the weather.

Beyond television, Murph has been a master of ceremonies for major community events including New Year’s Eve celebrations, festivals and sporting functions across the state.
Seven’s Director of News in Tasmania Gavin McDougall said Murph‘s contribution was immeasurable.
“Peter Murphy is more than a weather presenter – he’s part of the fabric of Tasmanian life,” McDougall said.
“His commitment, professionalism and connection with viewers have set an extremely high standard. His departure marks the end of an incredible chapter in our television history.”

Current weekend weather presenter Kiah Wicks will take over the weekday role.
“This has been a dream of mine since I was a girl,” Wicks said.
Murph married wife Donna in 1992 and they have two sons and two granddaughters.

“My wife Donna, of course, has been along for the entire period as well and no doubt is looking forward to spending every waking moment of every day with me from now on,” he said.
Murph‘s farewell broadcast will feature a special tribute to his contribution to Tasmanian television.
