Work to reopen the troubled Glenorchy War Memorial Pool is underway, with the local council confirming that aquatic engineers and specialist designers have been tasked with creating a “preliminary plan” for the project.
The pool has been closed for more than a year due to safety concerns about its deteriorating facilities.
The Glenorchy City Council say work can begin once the specifics of the promised $5 million funding from the state government, which will be included in the state budget in September, are confirmed.
“Council is willing to cash flow the works as soon as this confirmation is provided,” the council said.

Planning for the “scope of works” needed so far includes concrete repairs to the grandstand and plant room, a new slab over the plant room tunnel, new pool expansion joints and repainting and skim coat repairs.
The entry area and amenities building, including change rooms and toilets, will also be upgraded, along with the installation of a new pool heating system and switchboard.

An all-ability accessible ramp entry into the main pool will be built, pool drains will be repaired and upgraded and pavement around the pool surrounds will be fixed, while the slide will be removed.
A new and separate filtration system for the toddler pool and associated upgrades will also be implemented, contingent on the remaining budget.
A recent elector poll conducted alongside the council election revealed that the majority of the community wants the pool to be operational as soon as possible and potential improvements made to make the facility usable year-round.
