An aged care provider is looking to give its Kingston site a major upgrade, with plans to replace the ageing facility with 28 modern independent living units.
Christian Homes Tasmania has lodged a planning application with Kingborough Council to redevelop its property at 3 Denison Street, just 50 metres from Kingston’s CBD.
Under the proposal, the existing units – described as “at the end of life and no longer fit for purpose” – would be demolished to make way for two new three-storey buildings.
The development would feature 25 two-bedroom units and three one-bedroom units, along with a basement car park.

A central courtyard and a communal building with a shared kitchen, utility room and other amenities are also part of the plans.
Christian Homes Tasmania operators several other facilities in Kingston, Blackmans Bay and Snug.

According to the planning report, the project “responds to strong demand for independent living units for the ageing population within the Kingborough community and greater Hobart”.
The new buildings would cover about 54% of the site, with all structures set back three metres from Denison Street.
Developers say the proposal has “strong compliance with the planning scheme” and are confident it will be recommended for approval.
The application will now go out for public consultation before the council makes its decision.
