Tasmania Police have charged a 45-year-old man with drug trafficking after allegedly finding one kilogram of methylamphetamine in his backpack during an arrest in the state’s north.

Officers from the northern drugs and firearms unit arrested the man on Thistle Street in South Launceston around 4pm on Friday.

Police allege the quantity of ice seized was enough for approximately 10,000 street deals.

Detective Sergeant Brent O’Mahony said methylamphetamine continued to cause significant damage.

“Methylamphetamine is an insidious drug that causes significant harm within our community,” he said.

“Tasmania Police will continue to actively target people involved in the distribution and selling of methylamphetamine.”

The man was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and dealing with property suspected of being proceeds of crime.

He appeared in an out-of-hours court and was remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
