Police arrest alleged child rapist from north-west Tasmania

A young man from Tasmania’s north-west has been charged with rape and other child sexual abuse offences following a “targeted investigation”.

The 20-year-old from Wynyard was arrested by specialist detectives on Wednesday.

Police say the man allegedly initiated contact with a child over social media.

Police allege he then arranged to meet the child, whose age was not disclosed, in person and committed the offences.

The man appeared in Burnie Magistrates Court on Friday charged with rape, penetrative sexual abuse of a young person and indecent assault, among other offences.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear on August 29.
