A young P-plater is off the road for a month and facing significant penalties after he was caught speeding 64km/h over the limit while under the influence of drugs on the Bass Highway this morning.

The 18-year-old from Lutana was clocked doing 164km/h in a 110km/h zone near Westbury just before 11:30am on Saturday, behind the wheel of a red Holden Commodore.

Things went from bad to worse when the teen allegedly returned a positive result in a roadside drug test.

He has been fined $1,161.50 and given six demerit points for the “excessive speeding”.

His car has been clamped for 28 days and, as a P-plater who is normally only allowed four demerit points, he is also looking at a longer licence disqualification.

Sergeant Benjamin Kromkamp said the combination of drug driving and high-speed could have ended in tragedy.

“Speeding and drug driving are both part of the ‘fatal five’ causes for fatal and serious crashes, but in this example when you combined both, the consequences could have been disastrous,” he said.

“Had police not been actively patrolling this area, the high-speed driving could have easily resulted in another serious or fatal crash on our roads.”
