Police close Huonville Esplanade, residents hear ‘shouting and gunfire’

Police have confirmed a firearm was discharged in an “isolated incident” that closed The Esplanade at Huonville this morning.

Multiple residents reported hearing what appeared to be gunshots and shouting in the area around 1:10am.

Police have assured the public that “there is no threat to the wider community” and “the incident is now contained”.

One person is in custody and assisting with inquiries.

“Police are investigating a disturbance at Huonville this morning, where it is suspected that a firearm was discharged in the vicinity of the Esplanade and Main Road,” a spokesperson said.

“No injuries were sustained and the incident involved people known to each other.”

The Esplanade remains closed, with diversions in place.

Southbound traffic is being diverted via Judbury and Glen Huon, while northbound traffic is being diverted through Glen Huon and Judbury.

Cygnet traffic is being diverted via Flood Road in Huonville.
