A routine breath test on Tasmania’s east coast has led police to uncover $1 million in cash hidden in a cardboard box.

The discovery was made around 8:30pm on Saturday, when officers stopped a vehicle in Triabunna for a random breath test.

Police allege the substantial haul is linked to profits from illicit drug sales across the state.

A 57-year-old Mayfield man has since been charged with dealing in property suspected to be the proceeds of crime.

“This incident highlights the critical role frontline officers play in disrupting criminal networks and protecting the Tasmanian community,” police said in a statement.

The man will appear in court at a later date.
