Extensive search for missing 83-year-old Tasmanian woman Margaret Marshall ends in tragedy

The search for a missing 83-year-old north-west woman has ended in tragedy, after a body was found in Penguin on Friday afternoon.

Police received a call from a member of the public following the discovery on Dial Road around 12:30pm.

The woman is yet to be formally identified, however, it is believed to be Margaret Marshall, police said.

Initial investigations suggest there are no suspicious circumstances.

Marshall was last spoken to by family members on Tuesday and was last seen in West Mooreville around 6pm that evening.

Her vehicle, a silver 2005 Toyota Corolla, was found parked outside a Gawler home on Wednesday, prompting a large-scale search of the area on Thursday.

Police, search and rescue personnel and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were all involved in the search.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Earlier: A search has been ramped up for an elderly woman last seen in north-west Tasmania more than three days ago.

Margaret Marshall, 83, was reported missing to police on Wednesday by concerned family members.

She was last seen at West Mooreville around 6pm the night before and is believed to driving a silver 2005 Toyota Corolla with plates FG9084.

Search and rescue crews, with the assistance of the rescue helicopter, conducted a “significant search” of the Gawler area on Wednesday.

Sergeant Paul Murphy said Marshall is believed to have travelled to the remote area south of Ulverstone.

“We’re calling on anyone who has seen Margaret or her vehicle or has information about her whereabouts to come forward,” he said.

“It’s now been three days since family has last heard from Margaret and police will continue to follow up information and potential sightings so we can find Margaret and bring her home to her family.”

He said there are “serious concerns” for her welfare and asked anyone with information to contact police on 131 444.

Facebook group ‘Help find Margaret Marshall’ has been setup by family members to assist in the search operation, with almost 1,600 members.
