Fake $100 notes have been found circulating across Southern Tasmania in recent days.
Tasmania Police are urging locals to be on the lookout for the counterfeit bills, which they say “don’t feel real”.
Images of the fake notes shared by police show they appear to feature the words “For motion picture use only” and “Prank use only”.
“This is not legal tender. It’s used for motion props,’ the note reads.
“Please be vigilant for fake notes and if you have information on who is printing or circulating them, please contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Tasmania,” a spokesperson said.
According to the Reserve Bank of Australia, Australia has one of the lowest rates of counterfeiting in the world.
“Most people will never see a counterfeit. Even so, it is vitally important that people are aware of the security features included on Australia’s banknotes,” the RBA say.
Businesses that accept a counterfeit note are advised to contact police, to handle the note as little as possible and store it in an envelope.
