A teenage driver has been fined and given demerit points after police allegedly caught him speeding along a Tasmanian highway at 130km/h.

The 17-year-old from Burnie was nabbed on the Bass Highway near Forest about 9:20pm on Sunday.

Police said the P-plater was driving 30km/h over the speed limit.

He was slapped with a $615 fine and five demerit points.

Police said the incident was another example of “dangerous driving”.

“Road safety is a priority for Tasmania Police and motorists who engage in dangerous driving behaviours which put themselves and other road users at risk, such as speeding, can expect to be caught,” police said.

“Heavy penalties apply for high-range speeding, but a fine is nothing compared to the damage to families caused by a serious or fatal crash.”

The incident comes as Burnie police issued more than 25 speeding fines in school zones on Friday.
