Missing Japanese tourist found alive after overnight disappearance at Cradle Mountain

Updated 8:50am, Sunday: An 81-year-old Japanese tourist who vanished from Cradle Mountain overnight has been found “alive and well” by passers-by.

Members of the public spotted the man on the side of Belvoir Road, about 1.3 kilometres west of the Cradle Mountain Road intersection, around 7:45am Sunday.

Police said he had “walked away from his accommodation during the night and became disorientated in the darkness”.

He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was assessed by Ambulance Tasmania paramedics at the scene.

Earlier: Tasmania Police are searching for an 81-year-old Japanese man who went missing in Cradle Mountain National Park overnight.

The man was last seen around midnight on Saturday and has not been contactable since.

Police said they hold “concerns for his safety” due to believed medical issues.

Anyone who was in the Cradle Mountain area late Saturday night or early Sunday morning is urged to come forward.

Police are interested in hearing from anyone who may have spotted a man matching the missing person’s description.
