Tasmania Police are warning holidaymakers to be more vigilant after a spike in thefts at north-west coast caravan parks, with expensive mountain bikes becoming a prime target for opportunistic thieves.

Six mountain bikes were stolen from the Mersey Bluff Caravan Park on January 13 , prompting an investigation by detectives that led to all bikes being recovered and returned to their owners.

A 22-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman have been arrested and charged over the thefts, along with other offences committed in the region.

Both are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Detective Acting Inspector David Summers said the incidents show the need for visitors to take additional security measures.

“We encourage people to secure their bikes and other valuables with quality locks and store them in a safe location overnight,” he said.

“These thefts are often opportunistic, and taking extra precautions can significantly reduce the risk.”

Authorities are asking the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity in caravan parks or surrounding areas.
