Over two in three Tasmanian voters want the state parliament to go back to the negotiating table with the AFL to avoid building a new stadium, according to a YouGov poll.

The survey of 842 Tasmanian voters, conducted for The Australia Institute between June 12 and 16, found 69% believe the Tasmanian Parliament should renegotiate with the AFL to avoid constructing the proposed stadium at Macquarie Point.

Only 27% of respondents disagreed with calls for renegotiation, while 4% were unsure.

The poll also revealed deep scepticism about the AFL’s requirements for granting Tasmania a licence to join the national competition, with 69% of voters saying the league is treating the state unfairly.

Opposition to the stadium deal strengthens significantly among older voters.

While 58% of 18-24 year olds support renegotiation, this jumps to 72% among voters aged 65 and over.

The intensity of opposition also increases with age. Nearly half (49%) of older voters “strongly agree” with renegotiation, compared to just 31% of younger voters.

Independent voters show the strongest opposition to the current deal, with 81% supporting renegotiation, followed by Greens voters at 78%.

Labor voters also favour renegotiation by a significant margin of 71%, while Liberal voters are the least opposed, though still a majority at 56% support renegotiation.
