Kingston Beach has been closed for swimming after more than 30mm of rain lashed the area overnight.

The local surf life saving club made the call on Sunday afternoon to “cross the flags” as temperatures were forecast to hit 26 degrees.

“Our beach is an urban riverine beach, so rain unfortunately has a big impact for us,” the club said.

“The Derwent Estuary Program have a recommendation that people should not swim in the River Derwent for two days if there has been more than 10mm of rain within the preceding 24 hours.”

The club says Browns River and 10 stormwater outflows along the beach “all flow across the sand” into the River Derwent.

“Given that we had over 30mm last night, swimming is definitely not recommended for the next few days,” the club said.

Patrolling members will be out at the beach providing advice to people and recommending they stay out of the water.
