Port Latta bushfire scorches 60 hectares, smokey Bass Highway reopens

An emergency level bushfire that forced the evacuation of more than a dozen people from a caravan park and a remote part of north-west Tasmania remains at watch and act level.

Thick smoke from the blaze at Port Latta shut the Bass Highway on Sunday afternoon, with the road only reopening to traffic in the early hours of this morning.

Police have reduced the speed limit to 40km/h due to reduced visibility from high levels of smoke and are asking motorists to drive to the conditions.

The currently closed Crayfish Caravan Park will be re-assessed this morning.

Around 75 firefighters and 16 vehicles responded to the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a car crash earlier in the week.

The fire has so far burnt an estimated 60 hectares of land.
